Rubislaw Terrace, Aberdeen

Within an historic Aberdeen Georgian Terrace is a functional but elegant office space from Claire Canning Design and ABN7 Architects. With the help of Clippings, the design team chose a wide selection of Icons’ furniture to bring a sense of casual comfort to the high end space whose design brief was to create an aesthetic similar to a private members club or boutique hotel.

Working with the existing features within the terrace, the refurbishment of the space carefully considered the traditional elements of the building by making adaptations to the design to ensure they were still visible.

The Smile Lounge Low Back on Wooden legs with two nested Spire coffee tables within the lounge of the terrace

“Having previously seen Icons at Clerkenwell and London design weeks, when we won the project we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to specify their products.  We needed robust and durable furniture for the well-used office space, as well as it needing to be premium and sophisticated whilst maintaining comfort due to the clients needs. It was important to us that the furniture was still contemporary in form and aesthetic and Icons fitted this brief.” Claire Canning (Claire Canning Design) and Lindsey Hesketh (ABN7 Architects)

The inviting lounge area within the office space has been designed with comfort in mind. Deep hues of reds, green and blue is the chosen colour palette for the space with a selection of tactile soft furnishings to carry through the colour scheme.

Two Smile Lounge chairs can be seen sitting with two nested marble Spire Coffee Tables in the lounge. The Smile Lounge was chosen with a low back seat and wood leg variation. Still providing an active posture, the low back encourages openness and collaboration within the space – distinct to the high back which helps to offer privacy.

The Arena on 4 Star Base sits around a large table. Chosen for their organic, supportively shaped shell.

Situated in the executive boardroom sit a group of 10 Arena Chairs on 4 Star base upholstered in a rich red fabric. The sleek 4 Star base was chosen to exemplify the luxurious feel of the office by offering a traditional boardroom style base. Complimented with the organic and supportive form of the Arena’s shell, the chair invites guests to feel comfortable within the space, whether it is for long or short form meetings.

Within the same room sits a set of Smile Lounge chairs. Opting for the high back on wood base, the lounge chairs provide additional casual seating within the space. The high back provides a comfortable, active posture allowing the guests to use the chairs for working and to participate in the room’s activities.

Sitting at the end of the table are two Smile Lounge High Back chairs. Utilised for extra seating or a comfortable break away chair with an active posture.
The Arena 4 Star and Sky 4 Star chairs within the terraced office

Continuing into the private office adjoining the boardroom is the Sky Chair on 4 Star base. Chosen for their lightness, the chairs contrast against the prominent form of the Arena shell by providing seating for spontaneous meetings and casual conversations within the office space.

Looking through from the private office to the boardroom. Claire Canning Design chose to replicate the furniture choices for consistency in the design.

Clarie and Lindsey continue “We found the flexibility of choosing our own fabrics and hard finishes invaluable, we chose mostly Kvadrat upholstery -colour and texture were an integral part of our interior concept.  Icons have a great showroom which helped us imagine the pieces in our space and the team was really helpful and prompt with quotes.  We look forward to working with Icons on future projects.”
